| You are correct on what pre-ignition is, but detonation is a synonym for knock (in most cases). Knock/detonation is combustion of the end gasses after/while normal combustion has occured. This is usually due to heat and pressure and is abnormal combustion. Pre-ignition is, as you said, ignition before the spark. Pre-ignition is extremely destructive and happens well before spark (say 180 degrees even). Signs of detonation are broken ring lands, scuffed piston, etc. Pre-ignition is instantaneous and usually just melts a hole in the piston and the engine stops running. Engines can last some time w/ moderate to higher levels of detonation, but engines do not last under pre-ignition.
